Mural STC Rotterdam

The STC (College for Shipping & Transport) in Rotterdam Westzeedijk was renovated to obtain a complete new interior. Within this concept two classrooms were planned to get an interesting mural. Classroom 1: Maritime & Technique, classroom 2: ‘havenleer’ (harbor learning).

Taking inspiration from the harbor

To come to the best result, my research and design phase started in coordination with the designers of the interior concept. I continued with studying and photographing the surrounding Rotterdam harbor.

After coming to a main black & white style for both murals, three color versions were drafted and presented to the clients.

color versions 1,2 and 3

The titles in the illustration refer to the names of the classrooms. Accentuated in color, these titles give a sense of branding to the classrooms. Use of grayscale colors for the background give a modest and technical tone to the whole so that it doesn't become too prominent or distracting.

The results are two murals in which the scenery interacts and plays with the lettering. The 3d letters are subjected to operations - either practical or not - creating a sense of humor.
